These are the voices of women whose lives have been touched by the work of The Strength of a Skilled Woman Foundation. Their stories are our greatest motivation — and our deepest responsibility.
Before I joined the Foundation's tailoring programme, I had no income of my own. I was completely dependent on my husband and felt I had no value. The training gave me a skill, yes — but more than that, it gave me confidence. Today, I run my own fashion label from home. I now take orders, employ one apprentice, and can pay my children's school fees without asking anyone. This foundation did not just teach me to sew — it taught me to believe in myself.
I had always loved cooking but never thought it could be a real business. The Foundation's entrepreneurship training changed everything. They did not just teach me how to cook for a crowd — they taught me how to cost a job, write a proposal, and market myself. I now supply food to three offices in my area and have employed two other women. The mentorship gave me the courage I was missing. I am proud of what I have built, and I am not done yet.
I left secondary school early and for years I thought my future was limited. When I heard about the ICT and digital skills training, I was nervous — I had never used a computer properly. But the trainers were patient and encouraging. Within weeks I understood how to use basic software, manage social media, and do online transactions. I am now working as a digital assistant for a small business and earning a stable income. Education does not have an age limit, and this foundation proved that to me.
I am a widow with three children. After my husband passed, I did not know how I would survive. A friend told me about the Foundation and I applied to the cosmetology programme. The training was thorough — hair, nails, makeup, skincare. I graduated with a certificate and the Foundation connected me with a startup grant. I now have my own salon in my neighbourhood. My children eat and go to school because of the skills this foundation gave me. I will always be grateful.
At 38 years old, I could not read properly. I was ashamed to admit it. The Foundation's adult literacy programme was held in a small group — just women like me — with no judgement, only encouragement. In four months, I could read notices, fill in forms, and write simple letters. Now I help my children with their homework. I am also learning to use a smartphone properly. Learning has changed the way I see myself. I am not too old. I am not too far behind. I just needed someone to believe in me.
We partnered with The Strength of a Skilled Woman Foundation because we believe in their model — practical, community-rooted, and led by women who have walked the journey themselves. The transparency, professionalism, and genuine impact we have witnessed in the short time since their incorporation has confirmed we made the right decision. If you are looking for an organisation whose work actually changes lives, look no further.
